Our Education Journey

Growing With the Needs of Children and Schools

CMT's Education Programme has developed through long-term engagement with children, schools and communities in Sri Lanka.

Our education work began in 2013, responding to the immediate needs of children and village schools. Since 2016, the programme has continued to evolve in response to persistent gaps in education provision within our target communities.

Over time, our work has expanded from basic educational support to a comprehensive, multi-faceted approach that addresses root causes and builds sustainable educational ecosystems.

Why Education?

Every Child Deserves a Strong Foundation

Giving children the best chance of success begins with strong foundational learning. Children need more than the ability to memorise information for an examination.

We believe true education is transformative. It must nurture critical thinking, personal integrity, and the agency to navigate a rapidly changing world.

Students engaged in collaborative educational activities

Children Need Opportunities To:

Understand

Mastering concepts deeply instead of relying on rote examination recall.

Think independently

Forming original judgments with reason, logic, and self-confidence.

Ask questions

Embracing curious inquiry in environments where questions are welcomed.

Communicate

Expressing ideas with clarity and confidence in Tamil and English.

Create

Exploring imagination through creative arts, storytelling, and design.

Work with others

Fostering teamwork, shared leadership, and respectful collaboration.

Use technology

Navigating computers, digital tools, and the web safely and effectively.

Continue learning

Instilling an enduring love of inquiry that extends far beyond the school bell.

Our Education Programme was developed in response to children who may leave primary education without minimum competencies in important subjects.

Inequalities can continue to affect their learning, growth and opportunities at secondary level and beyond. We therefore focus on strengthening the foundation while helping children develop the wider skills needed for life.
